Clean the air filter

Slide out, clean and replace your Cala's air filter, then clear the reminder on your Cala's screen.

Updated October 31, 2026

The air filter keeps dust and dirt off your Cala's heat pump, just like the filter in an air conditioner. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can lower performance and shorten the life of your water heater. Clean it every 3 to 6 months. It takes about 5 minutes and no tools.

The reminder

Every 90 days, your Cala's Home screen shows a red message: Clean air filter. Go to Settings->Alert Management to clear. The message stays until you clean the filter and clear it (step 6 below).

Clean the filter

  1. Find the air filter. It is directly on the front of your Cala.

  2. Use the finger tab to slide the filter out.

  3. Wipe the filter clean, or rinse it with water.

  4. Let the filter dry completely.

  5. Slide the filter back into place.

Clear the reminder

Once the filter is back in, tell your Cala it's clean so it restarts the 90-day count.

  1. On your Cala's screen, press Down until SETTINGS is highlighted, then press Select. (If the screen is dark, press any button first to wake it.)

  2. Press Down until ALERT MANAGEMENT is highlighted, then press Select.

  3. Press Down until FILTER CLEANED is highlighted, then press Select. The FILTER CLEANED row disappears, and the red reminder is gone from the Home screen.
