Get to know your Cala's screen and buttons

Updated October 31, 2026

Your Cala has a screen on the front with four buttons below it. You can use it to start Boost, check on your heater and change its settings, even without the Cala app.

The four buttons

From left to right, the buttons are:

  • Back (left outer button): goes back one screen.
  • Up (left inner button): moves the highlight up.
  • Down (right inner button): moves the highlight down.
  • Select (right outer button): chooses the highlighted option.

Small icons on the screen, just above each button, show what that button does. Not every screen shows every icon.

To use a menu, press Up or Down until the option you want is highlighted, then press Select. At the end of a list, the highlight wraps around to the other end.

The Home screen

When the screen wakes, you see the Home screen. It shows:

  • The time, at the top.
  • How your Cala is connected: Wi-Fi, Sidewalk (connected through Amazon Sidewalk instead of your Wi-Fi) or Not Connected. If it says Not Connected, see Change Wi-Fi or reconnect an offline heater.
  • Hot water: a number of GAL with HOT WATER READY underneath. This is about how many gallons of hot water are ready to use. See How much hot water do I have?
  • Buttons: BOOST HEAT and SETTINGS. If your Cala isn't connected to the Cala app yet, you also see APP CONNECT.

Messages on the Home screen

Sometimes a short message appears on the Home screen. The common ones are:

  • Compressor Start Delay or Compressor Stop Delay with a number of seconds. This is normal. Cala waits a short time between starting and stopping the heat pump to protect it.
  • Clean air filter. Go to Settings->Alert Management to clear. It's time to clean the air filter. See Clean the air filter.
  • A banner that starts with DEMAND RESPONSE. Your utility has asked Cala to change when it heats. See Demand response: grid events on your Cala.
  • A short code with a message, or Multiple errors occurred. Cala has found something that needs a look. See Leak and heat pump alarms, or contact Cala support and read them the message.
